Butterfly? Moth?

Saw a lot of these up in the port hills on saturday. Not sure what they are or even if they're a moth or a butterfly. On that note I should also mention that Speculum has been updated with some images from the walk.

Well, the antennae is long and straight with a knob on the end, so it's likely to either be a butterfly or a member of the castnidae family of moths.

[sorry, correct spelling is 'castniidae' - if anyone really cares]

heh, yes it would appear so, though looking at the wikipedia article suggests there is plenty of exceptions to most of the rules for classifying them.

Wikipedia makes everyone an expert ;)

Heh yep, though "hack" might be more appropriate than expert :)

It's pretty
moths are just ugly butterflies that come out at nighttime
therefore it's a butterfly.
