More foolishness in the name of Religion

Female Muslim medics 'disobey hygiene rules' - Telegraph

Muslim medical students are refusing to obey hygiene rules brought in to stop the spread of deadly superbugs, because they say it is against their religion.
Women training in several hospitals in England have raised objections to removing their arm coverings in theatre and to rolling up their sleeves when washing their hands, because it is regarded as immodest in Islam.

Nice to know that it's apparently better to risk infecting someone with a deadly superbug than to be immodest.

can washing hands not be done in private, and specialized arm coverings (such as the ones used on the head) be used?

You would think so, though the advantage of doing it in the theater would be that there is a lot less chance for them to get contaminated between the wash and the operation. Also it's likely a good way to make sure no one forgets to wash them. As for special coverings they may help a bit but you still need to wash the arms and hands before you put them on.
